The Most Important Component of Survival
Without hope, it is almost impossible to survive alone in the wilderness. It is important because if you have water or food, but have no desire to live, than there is no use to have the other two components. If you have hope, you are willing to keep yourself alive, to keep going, and wanting to live. It helps you believe that you will survive, that someone will come for you, and that you will make it through the situation. In the book Hatchet, Brian gives up when the plane didn’t see him. He was thinking that the plane wouldn’t return, and that he would never leave the wilderness. But after he realizes that he must not let the thought of death come in again. So Brian thinks of himself as a new person. A person with hope. Also in the movie Castaway, Chuck has a hope of survival because he was on the island for 1460 days. But he continued looking for food and water and has hope to live and he believes that someone will come for him.
