JOEL'S BOOK REVIEW

Title: Spy Smuggler
Author: Jim Eldridge
Publisher: Scholastic Canada
Place of Publication: Canada
Year of Publication: 2007
Number of Pages: 192 Pages
Where I found the book : Christian Heritage School Library

Story Review
This book is called Spy Smuggler because it is about a boy named Paul Lelaud who helped smuggle a spy into and out of France. This took place from 1942-1944 and was based in France in a town named Chinon. The main characters in this book are Paul Lelaud, Paul’s mother, and Paul’s uncle Maurice. The problem in this book is that the German army had occupied their town, Chinon and they have had their freedom ripped away. So Paul’s uncle Maurice brought him into a group called the Resistance, the Resistance does secret things that go against the Germans and smuggle stuff in and out of the country without the Germans finding out. So Paul joined the Resistance group and he helped bring a British spy into France. The spy found a German general that wanted to help the British so they needed a plan to get the general back to Britain so they made a plan which used two planes one was a decoy that was used to fool the Germans the next was landing in a different place and that was the plane that was picking up the spy and general. In the end the plan worked and the spy and the general got safely back to Britain and the general helped Britain quite a bit. One of the important events were when a group called the Maquis who fights for the same cause as the Resistance but instead of keeping a low profile they attack Germans and kill them, the Maquis killed three Germans soldiers and the sheriff. The Germans killed five civilians for every one soldier killed this made the people in Chinon very angry at the Maquis. The theme of this book is working together to reach their goals because all the people worked together to drive the Germans out of Chinon.

Christian perspective
I do not think that this book was written from a Christian Perspective but there are some Christ like things in this book like the people all work together to free France. There are also some non Christ like things in this book like people are always lying to each other to the point you don't know if their lying or telling the truth. People also betray each other in this book but all the lying and betraying was to keep undercover so no one finds out but that doesn't make it right.
My Thoughts
I chose this book because I like reading books that are about people who fought in the war or were involved in the war in some ways. I liked the book because it was very interesting and you never knew if the people were going to get caught or get away and it was based on a true story so that is another reason I liked it because I like realistic fiction books or books that are based on a true story. I would recommend this book to the people who like books that are based on a true story and books about people that helped the war effort.

THE TUNNEL KING

Title of Book: The Tunnel King
Author of Book: Barbara Hehner
Publisher of book: HarperTrophyCanada
Place of Publication: United States of America
Year of Publication: 2004
Number of pages: 147
Where I found the book: CHS library

Story review
This book is titled the Tunnel King because this book is about a man named Wally Floody who was captured by Germans during world war two when his planed got hit and he had to bail out. The Germans took him to a POW (prisoner of war) camp where he and some other guys planed to escape and his role was the boss of all tunneling operations they nick named him the Tunnel King. This book took place mostly in Germany some of his training to be a pilot was in Brandon MB and his home town was Toronto MB. Wally was captured on his first mission in 1941 when a German fighter plane shot his plane down and he had to bail out. Wally was born in1918 and escaped imprisonment in 1945. The only main character in this book was Wally there were some other characters but they were not main. The problem in this book was Wally was captured and could not escape despite his best efforts all his tunnels were ether discovered or collapsed. The only reason Wally escaped was because Russian forces captured the POW camp he was in so he didn’t really escape he was just set free by Russians. I think this book was about never giving up even if it’s hard because the tunnel collapsed on Wally more than once but he kept trying even though in the end his plan never did come through.

Christian Perspective
This book  was not based on a Christian perspective but it showed some of Christ like qualities for instance Wally did not get all upset  when things didn’t go his way instead he kept trying and the Germans even though they were the enemy the Germans still showed respect to them. The prisoners also showed respect to the Germans they did not try to kill them or say words to them that were negative. Even though this book was not based on a Christian perspective it still showed Christ like qualities.

My thoughts
Over all I liked this book but some parts like the beginning of the book  were it  was telling about his normal life and all that  kind of stuff was a little on the boring side of things but closer to the middle and the end of the book it got more eventful. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes books that are true and is based on wars and history.

Joel’s Book Review

Title: A Boy At War

Author: Harry Mazer

Publisher: Scholastic

Place of publication: U.S.A in New York

Year of publication: September 2001

Number of pages: 104

Where did you find the book: C.H.S Library

Story Review:

I think this book is called A boy at war because even though he wasn’t a real soldier this war really affected him because this attack killed his father and injured his friend. This book mostly takes place in Honolulu at Pearl Harbour in December of 1941 the main characters are Adam, Davi, Martin, Adams father and mother, and Adams sister Bea. The main event this book was about was when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbour on Sunday, December 7, 1941. Just hours before the bombing Adam, Davi and Martin planed to go fishing so they went down to the harbour and the found an abandoned boat. Martin and Davi thought it was the pig god providing for them so they got into the boat and paddled away. When they started fishing they heard planes, at first they thought they were American planes until they saw the Japanese flag on the bottom of the wings. Because Davi and Martin were Japanese they started cheering so Adam tried to kill them but then Martin fought back. While they fighting the wash off the airplane flipped the boat and then when Adam was on the shore he saw Martin and Davi floating in the water and he dragged them ashore. After they where ashore Adam noticed Martin had a big chunk of wood right through his chest but they were both alive. So Adam carried Martin onto the dock and set him down and just realized he had been shot and the bullet went straight through his hand. Then a car came and picked Martin up it was a ambulance and the car brought him to the hospital and he lived but the piece of wood was an inch from his heart. While Martin was in the hospital a marine came up to Adam and thought he was in the navy so he gave him a gun and the group of sailors came to and they were guarding a road. After awhile Adam snuck off and went home were his family was holding shovels to defend themselves. Every one said there was no sign of his father because his father was in the navy and after a couple days they got a letter saying their father was missing and later they realized that he had died. I think the theme of this book was that even though you are not a soldier you can still be greatly involved in the war.

Christian Perspective

I do not think this book was written from a Christian perspective but I do think the characters in the book at times showed Christ like qualities like when the Japanese were attacking he didn’t run away and leave his friends to die even though he could have died. He also ran a long way carrying his friend to save his life. But the boys in this book I don’t think were Christians because Adam tried to kill the other boys.

My Thoughts

I chose this book because I read the one after it (Heroes don’t run) and I also like reading books about history and the world wars. I really enjoyed reading this book even though I usually dislike reading books. This book I thought was very interesting and the way he wrote the book you can just picture what is happening in the story. I thought the author really did a good job describing what is happening and just using really good detail.

HOPE!!!!!!!!!!

Hope is the most important component of surviving alone because without it you will think you will never get rescued so you won’t try to find food and water and you will probably die. If you have hope though you will have the strength and perseverance to find food and water and find shelter. In the movie “Cast Away”, Chuck was always thinking of ways to get food or build or improve his shelter, but if he had no hope he would have thought after four years he would never be rescued. Chuck also used a ball as a friend so he would not lose hope feel like and somebody was always going to be there with him. If Chuck didn’t have hope he wouldn’t have built that raft he probably would have killed himself and not thought of any ways to get off that island.

The Trenches

Title: The Trenches

Author: Jim Eldridge

Publisher: Scholastic Ltd.

Place of publication: United Kingdom

Year of publication: 2002

Number of pages: 140

Found book: Christian Heritage library

Story Review:

I think this book is called “The Trenches” because it takes place in world war one which is known as the trench war. It is called the trench war because it was mostly trench fighting. This book mostly took place on the western front and the place where the main characters were fighting for was a place called Passchendaele ridge. The main characters in this book are Billy Stevens and his friends Rob, and Charlie. The problem in this book was that the Germans were getting too close to France and Britain so they had to drive the Germans back into Germany. They had a hard time defending themselves because the Germans were so dug in and both sides were losing thousands of men a day. Billy and Charlie were in the Royal Engineers the engineers laid cable and fixed the cables. Rob was in the infantry who fights in the trenches. In the beginning of this book the year was 1914 and when this book ended it was 1918. Four of Billy’s friends died in the war by an explosion or being hit by a piece of shrapnel and Rob died by disobeying orders. The reason Rob didn’t obey because when the whistle blew to go over the top of the trench Rob didn’t go because he thought it would be suicide so they tied him to a post and shot him. This book is about the men in world war one telling about the experiences they had.

Christian Perspective

I don’t think this book was written on a Christian perspective because when his friend died he said “thank God it wasn’t me” and if he was a Christian he would not be so scared to die. I think they are not also Christians because they will never pray and there was only one mention of God in the entire book and it wasn’t really that positive.

My thoughts

I chose this book because I enjoy studying history and especially the world wars and because it looked interesting and I don’t really like fiction books I only like realistic fiction or nonfiction. I really liked this book and even though it was fiction it still was realistic. I would recommend this book to anyone who is like me and enjoys studying history because it is not far off the truth.

Heroes Don't Run

Title: Heroes Don’t Run

Publisher: Scholastic printing

Year of publication: September 2005

Place of publication: printed in U.S.A

Number of pages: 116

Story review

This book is about a boy named Adam Pelko who was too young to join the military, so his grandpa signed a paper that allowed him to join. Then he went on a train that brought him to boot camp, where he spent the next seven months training to be in the military. Then after his military training he went to an island called Okinawa, where he was in combat with the Japanese soldiers. Then one day he was fighting in a shell hole and a mortar exploded above him and his commander, which sent them flying into the ground. Then he was in the hospital he had a broken leg and a concussion and if his commander didn’t land on him, he would have also died. I think the title is Heroes Don’t Run because even though he thought he would die he still joined the military because it was the right thing to do.

Christian Perspective

It is not a very Christ like book because their always talking down to one another and swearing. Sometimes they encourage and help one another, but not most of the time. It is very descriptive, in some ways good and other times bad.

My thoughts

I really liked this book because I love studying about the world wars. It was one of the few books I liked, because it was full of action and it was about World War 2. I would recommend this book to anyone who is into studying the World Wars.
