Luke's Book review

Luke’s Book Review
Title: Mark Twain
Author: Clinton Cox
Publisher: Apple (Scholastic)
Place and year of publication: New York, July 1999
Number of pages: 240
Where you found the book: School library

Story review
The reason this book is called “Mark Twain” is because it is all about Mark twain. This book is set in many places, including Hannibal, Missouri, Florida, Missouri, St. Louis, Philadelphia, New York, among other places. The main characters in this book are Mark Twain and his wife, Olivia Langdon. This book has no problem, because it is a biography with no plot or storyline, just facts. Some important things that happen in this book are that Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain’s original name) moves, He moves again, He becomes a riverboat pilot He moves again, He marries Olivia, He has his first daughter, second, third, first dies, fourth born, He writes books, He dies. The theme in this book is to fight (or write) for what you believe in.

Christian Perspective
This book is appropriate for about ages 12+.  In this book, it talks a bit anti-God.  At one point, Mark Twain says “Anyone who is in his right mind and is not purposely blinding himself cannot believe in God.” There also are a few swears in this book, and it talks about Twain laying awake at night thinking of new and creative ways to kill his teacher (He never puts any into effect).
My Thoughts
The reason that I chose this book is because my teacher wanted me to pick a biography and this is the first one I saw. I didn’t like this book very much, because it was boring, not funny or exciting, and it was a biography. I don’t generally like biographies, and this was no exception. I would recommend this to anyone why is a fan of Tom sawyer, and people who like biographies. I would do this because this is a biography, and it is about the writer of Tom Sawyer.

Title: On the course with Tiger Woods

Author: Matt Christopher

Publisher: Little, Brown and Company

Place& year of publication: the book didn't mention anything

Where I found it: CHS library

Number of pages: 129pg.

Summary

As any other child, Tiger's parents mean the world to him. His dads name is Earl Wood and his mothers name is Kultida Woods. The main characters of this book is Tiger Woods and his parents. The theme is of this book is adventurous because Tiger Woods starts from being an unknown kid and becomes one of the biggest sport stars today. the title of this book is called on the course with Tiger Woods which means doing deeper into Tiger Woods golf life.

Most who played golf were white people or really rich people. So it was hard for Tiger Wood to play golf because people would always make raciest comments because he was black. But at the end of each game no one said anything about his skin because they would be amazed at his golf skills. As Tiger was still in elementary he was getting a lot of college offers. But he ended going pro before going to college.

Tiger Woods was always too good to be true. From the moment his father first put a club in his hands, before he even took his first steps. He made his first public appearance at the age of 2, on the Mike Douglas Show, where he dazzled the audience with a swing that left people gasping. As an amateur golfer, he put together a record so dominating that it was unbelievable, winning six national titles in succession, three Junior Amateurs, followed by three Amateurs. When he turned pro, he not only racked up victories in regular PGA Tour events but also won major championships by breaking records.

Christian perspective

This book was not written in a christian perspective but it had a lot of Christ like actions. For instance when people would always make raciest comments, Tiger Woods wouldn't respond in a aggressive way he would go home and talk to his parents about it. The book said only one thing about Tigers religion and it mentioned that he was a Buddhist. Even though Tiger Woods was not christian he was always kind and he acted like a christian.

My thoughts

This is definitely one of the best biographies I've ever read. Despite not being a fan of golf, I still found this book very interesting. From him starting to play golf at a young age and still be really good, It shows you why Tiger Woods is such a great golfer. Who doesn't want to know the secret of being a great athlete? It seems like Tiger Woods is such a great golfer because he started playing golf at a very young age.

Victoria's Book review

Title: The Spiderwick Chronicles
Author: Tony Diterlizzi and Holly Black
Publisher: Simon&Schuster Books for young readers
Place and Year of Publication: New York
Number of Pages: 323
Where You Found The Book: CHS library

This story is mainly about Jared Grace, his twin brother Simon Grace and his sister Mallory Grace. Because his dad had left his mom, his family had to stay at his great aunt Lucindas house.
The house was very old the doors were faded gray, worn with age and it was almost considered as a shack. This book is called
Spiderwick because their great great uncle Arthur spiderwick had wrote the Guide. The guide was the secret to all things. Since the people didnt know about the creatures, the creatures wanted to destroy it because they didnt want people to know about it.
Jared hated the house, the house looked like it was falling apart and he could hear something inside of the wall rustling.
Jared couldnt sleep so he shook his twin brother awake.
Mallory was in the lead walking a few paces and stopping to listen then she swung the boom handle at the wall. The wall was broken into piece. The three of them could still hear the noise. Simon pointed out, look! he bent down to touch a small door.
It was a dumbwaiter. The dumb waiter took Jared to the small library there it was a chest. Inside there was square bundle, wrapped in dirty cloth and it was a field Guide.
Since Jared found the book everything started to change. Goblins had kidnapped his brother Simon, troll wanting to eat them and ferries who wanted to make them a hostage. Will they keep the book safe?
Theme: fantasy, adventure and mystery

Christian perspective: This book was not written in Christian perspective. It was based on magical book and magical creatures. One thing that Jared should have done in Christian way was when he got scared and woke his brother up he should have prayed. In the book of Psalm 34:4 says, I sought the lord, and he answered me, he delivered me from all my fears. When Jared was complaining about his great aunts house he should have been thankful and gracious.

My thoughts: I chose this book because this book had fantasy and adventure in it. I really enjoyed reading this book because the creatures had very unique names and some of them made me laugh. One thing that stood out to me the most was when Jared wanted to save his brother Simon and it really showed how he cared for him. Recommend this book to a person who likes reading an adventure and fantasy.

Meredith's Book Review

Title: Orphan at My Door
Author: Jean Little
Publisher: Scholastic Canada Ltd.
Place and Year of Publication: Markham, ON, Canada, 2001
Number of Pages: 199
Where You Found The Book: CHS library

Story Review:
This is the diary of a young girl named Victoria Cope.  Victoria lives in Guelph, Ontario, with her family and the story takes place during the 1980’s.  Victoria receives a diary on her eleventh birthday from her mom.  She promises that she will write in it until every page is full, and she does just that.

The Cope Family has a girl named Peggy helping them with the housework, but when she turns in her notice that she’s leaving, the Cope family receives a home girl from France to take her place.  Her name is Mary Anna Wilson and she’s twelve years old.  Her little brother, Jasper, was also taken in by another family to work as a home boy, and Mary Anna is determined to find him.  Will he, as the orphan, show up at their door as the title suggests?

The family by which Jasper is taken in is very cruel to him, and all he wants is to run away and find his sister.  This is a story full of secrets, friendships, hard times, and a sister’s unfailing love for her brother.  Will Mary Anna find Jasper?  And if she does will he be able to stay with her?  Victoria finds herself writing about what seems to be the most exciting year of her life, as a nail biting story unfolds before her eyes.

Christian Perspective:
I believe that this story was written from a Christian perspective because in the story the characters go to church, pray regularly, and are very strict about the “Sunday Rules.”  Victoria’s family often deals with conflict in a godly way, although the people that have custody over Jasper don’t.  This story taught me that God will always help us persevere through our troubles, and that we need to be kind and show love to others.  It also taught me that I shouldn’t judge someone by appearance before I get to know him or her.

My Thoughts:
I thought that this book was really well written and it kept me engaged throughout.  At first I was unsure about reading a historical fiction book because I don’t particularly enjoy history.  This book, however, was very good, and I think I’ll read more books similar to it.  I chose this book because I had to read a historical fiction book and I’ve seen classmates read this series.  I liked it because it felt like I was in the story and the plot was very real.  It gave me a sense of what life was like back then.  I would recommend this book to middle school students who are looking to read something other than fantasy or mystery, because it was really interesting and I really enjoyed it.

Story Review:

If myths of far away enchanted worlds are difficult for you to imagine, then your eyes need to open now! In England, in the late 1800's, lived two neighbors, Polly and Digory. Polly lived with her parents, while Digory lived with his aunt, his very ill mother, and his strange-mannered Uncle Andrew. It all began with Uncle Andrew or as he was called the “magician”, hence the title, “The Magician’s Nephew”. The famous author, C.S. Lewis, wrote an epic series of “The Chronicles of Narnia” starting with this brilliant fantasy! He wrote in a theme of mystery - of everything they were about to discover. Another was a theme of urgency - to escape from the White Witch. Last but not least was the theme of amazement - at the creation of a new world. This was all about to be part of the two neighbors’ lives!

Polly and Digory were one day exploring in a secret tunnel they found in the attic. They were mainly focused on finding an abandoned, supposedly haunted, house. They thought they were at the right place until the door slammed open and they found something better than the haunted house, Uncle Andrew’s study room. They thought it would be a good chance to explore and see what Andrew spent most of his time on and paid the most attention to, until they were locked in! Andrew locked them in to trick them in taking part of an experiment he was doing. He told Polly that she could have one of the yellow rings he made and she did. However, he wasn’t offering, but he was sending her off to her possible doom, she vanished! Of course, Digory fell into the trap of having to go after her and he did. They ended up finding themselves in a very quiet, beautiful, and enchanted forest. It was so peaceful and dreamy that they almost were going to forget who they were forever! They named it “The Wood between the Worlds” because there were so many different pools that they discovered they could jump into to get to different “worlds”! Of course, they marked the pool they got out of to know which one is for “their world”. They head off jumping into another one to discover a different, perhaps dangerous place!

That world was so dull and dark, with a red sun that looked like it was older than ours and was barely shining in a black sky, which was very mysterious! The place was full of ancient ruins and basically no life. Polly and Digory became more carious about this place, though Polly was a little reluctant to keep going. They explored further and further inside and came to a stop. They finally found something worth looking at, a room full of hundreds and hundreds of majestic, glorious, and powerful looking people. At least that’s what they thought at first, but then they discovered these were incredible waxwork figures or statues! The statues looked glorious and magnificent, but as they went further inside the statues became duller. Suddenly, they came across one that was confusing them. Her statue looked beautiful but her skin was so white and she looked vicious, brutal, and proud! Then, they found a square pillar inside the room with a golden arch, a bell, and a hammer on top of it. Through these things, they made the biggest mistake of their lives, they stroke the bell! At first, it gave a sweet sounding note, a steady note. It started getting louder and louder. It eventually became so loud beyond imagination, to the point that stones couldn’t stand it and a quarter of the roof fell! That statue that took their breath way became alive! She was Jadis, the Queen of Charn, the place they were in. She told them her story from beginning to end, but didn’t tell them she was up to get their world and she almost did!

In their world, she created such chaos and everyone was so terrified because they’ve never seen anything like what she did! On a hansom’s roof standing – not sitting - and holding a whip was Jadis the Queen of Queens and Terror of Charn! Without taking the chance of letting anyone get hurt, Polly and Digory rushed to get her out and bring her to “The Woods between The Worlds”. When they got there, they quickly jumped into another pool, trying to escape, but just as they reached the new world they discovered that they had company! The Queen was there, along with a Cabby, Uncle Andrew, and a horse! They were all standing beside Polly and Digory when they vanished from their world to the “Wood between the Worlds” therefore they vanished with them! Regardless, this world was different, it was dark and dull with absolutely nothing in it!

They stood there, blind, and not knowing whether they’re dead or alive! Finally, in the midst of the darkness and silence, they heard a voice singing! It was the most beautiful sounding, magnificent, indescribable voice they’ve ever heard! However, what they saw next was incredibly the most glorious! They heard a harmony of voices singing and thousands of thousands of stars appeared. It was almost as if those stars were singing! They were much brighter than our stars. Then, the true light started appearing! It was a newborn sun rising from the East and after it, there was a fresh breeze spreading over the beautiful landscape! Trees and new grass filled the new earth. It was breathtaking and made it unbelievable for them to think they’re still alive! BUT … the most fascinating, unimaginable, glorious view of them all was who was behind all this, who was going to assign them the most difficult tasks, and make them nobles, the Creator of this Narnia, Aslan!

Christian perspective:

Of course, this book was not written from a Christian perspective. It involved magic, many mythical “worlds”, and an evil witch, these are all unrealistic things! However, C.S Lewis was a Christian who clearly brought Genesis 1 into his fantasy. The “New World” in the beginning was dark and dull. Genesis 1:2 says, “Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep”. Aslan, “representing” God in the book, created the light of the stars and the sun. Genesis 1:3 says, “And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light”. Even in fantasy, existence without a creator wouldn’t make sense! No voices can be heard by chance and no trees can come up on their own! One thing I love about this book is the fact that it shows that just as music needs a musician and voices need singers – ex. the stars in the new world – a huge and extraordinary world definitely needs an unlimited and all-knowing creator. Another thing is that during the creation of the New World, thousands of stars were singing. This represents in our real world how all creation glorifies the name of God!

My Thoughts:

I chose this book, because it was the first in the series of “The Chronicles of Narnia” and I’ve read the second book before it. I wanted to see how the series began and how Narnia came to be! I also wanted to do a book review on a fantasy book which I haven’t done before. I was fascinated by this book and how the author brings the story to life. I loved it! There were a few drawings here and there to help the reader picture what is happening – it certainly helped me. One of my favorite parts in the book was the creation of Narnia, because of the way C.S Lewis described it. I could almost hear Aslan’s song and see the stars, along with the newborn sun! C.S Lewis used excellent vocabulary and left the reader hanging every chapter. I recommend this book to those who have creative imagination, because that will allow them to hear, see, or even smell everything in the book. This will make it even more interesting than it is. I recommend it to people who have read other parts of the series or even those who have only heard about it, because this is the explanation of the first discoveries of Magic in the series. It will allow you to better understand the rest of the series. Enjoy reading!

Brian's Winter

Title: Brian’s Winter
Author: Gary Paulsen
Publisher: Scholastic
Place and year of publication: Broadway, New York 1996
Number of pages: 133
Where I found the book: CHS Library

Thirteen year old Brian Robeson is stranded in the Canadian wilderness. To survive he must rely on his intelligence, his instinct, and a hatchet. He had been in a plane crash. He had lived day by day for 54 days until he found the survival pack in the plane which has helped live. This book is a companion book to “Hatchet” and the plot is “what would happen if Brian had not been rescued by the plane. In "Hatchet” Brian has nothing to help him survive except the few items he happened to have with him when the plane crashed. The title Brian’s winter means that this book will be talking about Brian surviving the winter. It doesn’t mention what time this happens but we know it happens in winter time. In this story Brian is the only main character. The theme of this book is don’t lose hope in hardest situations and think of ways on how you can improve that situation. Brian is one of those people who are actually better off independently.

In this book there are 2 parts, the first part is fall and second part is winter. In The Fall Brian receives many signs that winter is coming but doesn’t notice them until the end of fall. In the survival package there was a rifle but Brian was not comfortable with it and it was running out of bullets so he stuck to his bow and arrow. One night as Brian sleeps in his shelter a bear comes and eats some of Brian’s fish. Brian then notices the bears blocking the shelter and Brian yells “Hey- get out of here”. The bear threw Brian across the campground leaving him scratched and soar in the morning. Brian then decided he would need to make a larger weapon he couldn’t use his small bow because it was good for smaller game like rabbits and fool birds. He then made 2 larger bows, one served as a spare. He could use this bow to defend himself and hunt bigger game. Later on in fall he with more and  more signs of winter coming, Brian decides to winter proof his shelter by filling in mud through the wooden walls like how he saw beavers do it. He also has a small fire inside his shelter. Other ways Brian gets ready for winter is by making a vest from rabbits skin to wear.

One day he decides to hunt bigger game so as he was outside his camp ground he saw a group of wolves eating a deer he waited for the wolves to finish and took what’s left of the deer for himself. There was a lot of deer meat left and lasted weeks. He would also make boots from the deer hide. A couple days later he notices he is laying between an angry bear and some venison he left out last night. He tried to move out of the way but the tightening string on his sleeping bag would not come loose so he was stuck in it. The bear scooped up and tossed him to the side. The bear is about to finish him off when he hears something. He turns around to a direct spray in the face from a skunk. The skunk comes by very often and threats to spray Brian so that Brian will toss her a piece of meat. He then named her Betty. With Brian low on meat he goes hunting and succeeds in getting a moose which he had a one on one scenario but he was Brian was safe at the end. Brian then realizes that he will be stuck here for a long time so he tries to make living in winter easier so he makes some snow shoes that prove to work. Brian looks near the lake and finds some Human footprints. Following those footprints he finds that just a few hundred meters from him a Native-American family is living there. They get supplies from an airplane that comes there every month. Brian gets to spend a month with them and he ends up really enjoying their company. When the month was over the plane came and took Brian with them to head back home to meet his family and friends.

MY THOUGHT

I chose this book because I am interested in survival type of stories and I thought that Hatchet was an amazing action book and I wanted to see how much better can this story get and it did get better. I think this book was really informative about the survival subject. It talked about how hunting and surviving didn’t only take skill but a good positive thinking and that is true. In the beginning I found it hard to pay attention to the book because there was only one character, but in the end Gary Paulsen introduced a lot of details keeping me glued to my story.  One other thing I liked about this book is being focused on just one idea, which kept me from getting lost in so many details and small stories inside the story. I recommend this to people interested in survival and action stories.

                                                      CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVE

This book was not written in a Christian perspective. But throughout this book Brian shows Christ-like behaviour even though he is the only character. Some ways he does that is not by swearing or cursing. Some ways Gary Paulsen could have made Brian more of a religious character is if he would talk about Brian praying to God for help and just talking to him. But this also depends on the author’s faith so Gary Paulsen may not be a Christian making that a reason why this book is not written from a Christian perspective. In the end Brian finally gets to talk with other humans who were Native Americans and after spending three weeks with them he feels as if he is part of the family and he doesn’t want to leave. Another way this reflects Christ-like behaviour is that Brian is acceptance of others and doesn’t judge.

90 Minutes In Heaven

Title: 90 Minutes In Heaven
Author: Don Piper
Publisher: Revell
Place and year of publication: United States of America, 2004
Number of pages: 206
Where you found this book: Public Library

Story Review

At the moment the truck impacted the car, Don finds himself standing in heaven surrounded by a brilliant light. A large crowd of people were standing before a large gate. The crowd moves toward Don, and he begins to recognize people he knows. The first person he sees is his grandfather, Joe Kulbeth. Joe embraces Don with a strong hug, as Don remembers riding in an ambulance with his Grandfather and then receiving the news that Joe had died. Many others crowd in to embrace and welcome Joe. A childhood friend killed in a car accident greets him; Don's great-grandfather appears, as does his great-grandmother and several school teachers. Don realizes that each of these people have played a role in his own Christian walk.

Don Piper dies in a horrific car accident. Ninety minutes after his death, Don Piper begins singing "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" inside his crushed car. In what can only be explained as an amazing miracle fueled by intense faith. Don Piper dies and then lives again after spending ninety minutes at heaven's gate. For the rest of his life, Don will try to come to terms with why he was allowed to experience the comfort of heaven only to be sent back to earth. In this book there are themes of prayer and faith. This book is called 90 minutes in heaven because Don was in heaven for 90 minutes.

Christian Perspective

11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”. Jeremiah 28:11 We as humans have plans and goals for ourselves, and if we are followers of Christ, the plans that God has for us will come to play. Don’s plan was to go to the conference and preach, but that wasn’t God’s plan for Don at the moment. Instead he got into an accident and shattered his leg. At the same time he experienced the time of his life in heaven’s gate! God’s plan for our lives is so much better than we expect from ourselves. God’s plans for his children are good and plans that will help us grow, never to harm us. God’s plan for Don turned out to be for the better, when Don came back to life he was sharing his story and related with people who lost a loved one. Don’s story impacted many just because God had something to do with it. Make sure God has something to do with your story, because without him it’s like a sandwich with nothing in it but bread, bland and bitter.

Your Thoughts
I chose this book because I like reading stories that are true and give me knowledge.  Since I have a desire of having a good understanding of heaven, this book caught my eye. I would recommend this book to people who would like to know more about heaven.  The book is so interesting; I would like to read it again.  The reason I liked this book is due to the clearer explanation that it provides about heaven.  I want to have God in my story, and to see heavenly things outside of this world.

Christian Perspective

This book was kind off based on a Christian perspective and showed some Christ like qualities for example, Shaq at one point of his life was extremely gentile even though people made fun of him for his height and weight. Shaq’s not even Christian, ends up he’s Muslim. The names of his children are all Islamic names.

My Thoughts

I enjoyed reading this book but I hate reading about all the games he played. I think this book has described every game Shaq has played. I recommend this book to people who enjoy sports, athletes, and tall people.

Olivia's Book Review: RULES

Title: Rules
Author: Cynthia Lord
Publisher: Scholastic
Place and year of publication:  New York, 2006

Story Review:
12 year old Catherine just wants a normal life. Since her brother has autism, her parents don't pay attention to her and her needs. To keep her little brother out of trouble, she makes rules for him like "no toys in the fish tank" or "keep your pants on in public". Catherine's best friend goes to Florida every summer to live with her dad, and when Catherine's new neighbour Kristi moves in, she hopes that they will become friends. The themes in this book are strictness, routines, romance, and being worried. This story takes place in North America, in the summer. This book is called "Rules" because Catherine is always making rules for her brother to keep him in order without him embarrassing him and herself. The main characters in this book are Catherine, her little brother David, Kristi, Ryan, and a new interesting friend named Jason.

Catherine and her mother take David to the clinic every day to help him with his autism. Catherine loves to draw, so while they were waiting for David, she decides to draw a boy in a wheelchair sitting across the room. The boy's mother leans over to the boy then sharply asks Catherine to stop drawing her son. Catherine was surprised and embarrassed so she apologizes and draws something else. The next time they go to the clinic the boy in the wheelchair was there again, but when she sits down, the boy's mother wheels his chair over to her, tells her that his name is Jason, and explains to her that he cannot talk, so he uses a book that has a bunch of words with pictures beside them which he taps to make sentences. Over the weeks they became friends and Catherine makes new, exciting words for Jason.

Ryan is a boy who lives on Catherine's block who she can't stand because he always makes fun of David and takes advantage of him since he cannot help himself. But when her new neighbour Kristi comes, she likes Ryan and Ryan likes her too. Kristi sees the picture that Catherine had drawn of Jason and asks if he is Catherine's boyfriend. Embarrassed she says no and doesn't want to tell her that he is a disabled boy because she doesn't know what Kristi will think of her. One day Catherine and Kristi go to the pond to swim. While they are there Ryan comes to the shore, so they get out of the water to meet him. Ryan asks if Kristi has asked Catherine yet. Confused, Catherine asks what they're talking about. Kristi asks Catherine if she wants to go to the dance with them on Saturday night. Catherine was pretty sure that the only reason she asked her was because she wasn't allowed to go by herself, and one of Catherine's rules is "no dancing in public unless it's pitch black", so she tries making excuses not to go.

At the clinic the next day Jason asks Catherine if she wants to come to his birthday party on Saturday. luckily, it was the same day as the dance so she agrees to come. She tells Kristi that she was going to Jason's party and that she was invited too, even though she knew Kristi couldn't come. At the party Jason asks why Kristi didn't come along, Catherine explains that Kristi is going to a dance in the evening with Ryan. Jason asks if Catherine wants to go to the dance with him but Catherine hesitates and looks away. Jason asks if she was embarrassed of him and she says "no, it's just that I doesn't like dancing". But Jason knows better and says that that is a stupid excuse and wheels his chair out of the room. The party's over. Catherine feels really bad and decides to make it up to Jason and see if he wants to go to the dance after all. When she calls, Jason's mother says he probably won't come, but Catherine begs and then waits at the dance for Jason to come. Will Jason ever show up and make up with her? Or is their friendship ruined forever?

Christian Perspective:
This book was not written in a christian perspective. Catherine had patience with her little brother, but sometimes she got fed up with him, which is understandable. She was always too worried about what Kristi and other people would think of her and that they would think she's weird for having a handicapped friend. Instead of shying away from the truth about Jason when Kristi asked, she could have just told her the truth and not be worried about it so much. And instead of worrying about her little brother always messing up or making Catherine and himself  look stupid, just to accept him the way he is just like Jesus would have done.

Your Thoughts:
I chose this book because it looked interesting and a few of my friends had read it and told me I should read it too. I really liked this book because it talks about things that a normal teenager would have to deal with in  life, like fitting in, and family and friend problems. I didn't really like the ending of the book because to me it felt like it wasn't finished or there was a page missing or something, but otherwise the story was very good. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes realistic fiction books, or something they can relate to. I would also recommend this book to teenagers with younger siblings or a difficult relationship with friends, and it might give you some guidance.

Story Review

This story is about a man named Richard Wurmbrand. It took place in Romania and the story began in the year 1944. Richard had grown up as an orphan with a family in Romania. His life was bitter and plain with no religion. He was an atheist and simply refused to believe in Christ, but still something drew him to churches and their services on Sundays. He had a great interest in religion and wanted to know more. He spoke to a pastor and the pastor gave him a bible. Richard read it and accepted Christ into his heart. His burning passion for Christ grew and he became a pastor of his own church, but soon after, the communists came into Romania and set up a political system known as Marxism (a form of communism), which didn’t allow for much religious or political freedom. Communists took over Romania and replaced Christian pastors with spies because they didn’t want anyone believing in Christ. Richard simply could not become a spy. He founded a long line of churches known as the underground church. They did everything to convert people to Christianity, but their actions had a consequence. Torture, which explains the title “Tortured for Christ”. If they were caught in these acts, they were taken to jail and beaten, but they did not care. Their love of God had grown so strong that it did not matter.

Christian Perspective

This book was definitely Christian, as the title indicates. Christ was applied to all aspects of their life even in the worst times they prayed and never doubted God. Their strength came from God and they were internally strong even when they were physically weak. In jail or on the streets they had no fear. This was admirable and the most I can say for this is that they never feared, were always strong, and had hope.

My thoughts

I chose this book because I had to do a biography, and I really wanted to read something Christian. I thought this book was amazing! I have to say that Richard gave me hope for spreading Christ. I have no need to fear because this is an obvious representation that God is always with you. This man was admirable and I love the way his problems were handled. I have to say that there was nothing that I disliked about the book. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to read a really interesting story about

Title: My Life with the Chimpanzees
Author: Jane Goodall
Publisher: Pocket Books
Place & Year of Publication: USA, April 1996
Number of Pages: 156
Where I Found the Book: School library

Story Review:

Jane Goodall herself wrote this book and she tells us her story. Jane was born in London on April 3, 1934. She lived in England with her mom, dad, and younger sister Judy, till she was 5 years old. Then they moved to France. But when WWII started it was no longer safe to live in France, so they moved back to England.

When she was 7 years old she read “The Story of Doctor Dolittle”. That’s when she decided that she had to go to Africa someday. She became very interested in animals and she started to study animals near her home- squirrels, birds, and all kinds of insects. She spent a lot of time with horses and taught tricks to her dog Buds and her neighbours dog Rusty.

After she finished school she lived with a family in Germany for a few months, because her mom wanted her to visit the country that had been their enemy during the war. When she moved back to England she went to school in London to become a secretary, because her mom had told her that secretaries could work anywhere in the world.

One day Jane received a letter from her old school friend, Clo. Clo’s parents had bought a farm in Kenya and Clo invited Jane to visit. Finally Jane’s dream had come true. She was going to Africa!

While she was in Africa she got a job. She was a secretary for Louis Leakey. Louis was an anthropologist and paleontologist (in other words, he studied animals and Early Man). When Jane had raised enough money she sent a check to her mom so she could come to Africa.

Louis Leakey had told Jane of some chimpanzees he heard of living in Tanganyika. Jane wanted to go and study these chimpanzees. Through many struggles, Jane was able to go and study the chimpanzees, and her mom was with her for a while. Jane tells us all about what she did and what she learned.

There’s the constant theme of adventure in this book as Jane talks about some amazing experiences she had in the jungle. She traveled a lot and her life was far from dull. The book is titled “My Life with the Chimpanzees” because the book is about Jane’s life studying the chimpanzees.

Christian Perspective:

Jane talks about going to church regularly and stuff like that but she never actually says that she’s a Christian. But it would’ve taken A LOT of courage to go live in the wild with the chimpanzees. Christians need that type of courage. God gives us courage like that. Studying animals in the wild also takes a lot of patience. Patience is definitely a gift from God. Unfortunately, not a lot of people have that gift. At least, that’s what it seems like.  We can learn a lot from Jane’s life.

My Thoughts:

I enjoyed this book. Sometimes autobiographies can be a little slow or boring but Jane wrote in a way that makes you want to keep going. She connects with the reader. I choose this book because I’ve heard a lot about Jane’s life and it sounded very interesting, so I wanted to find out for myself what her whole story was.  I’d recommend this book to someone who loves animals or someone who wants to work with animals when they’re older because that’s what Jane did. Almost everybody’s heard of Jane Goodall but I encourage you to read the book anyways because she has some amazing stories!

Story review
The title is the storyteller because C.S Lewis because he wrote many books like the Narnia series. It takes place in many places it takes place in England and Germany. The main characters are C.S Lewis (aka Jack) and his brother warren. There isn't really a problem well I guess he is in the army and he has been moved around alot cause of his school. There are many themes in this book but the main theme is about his life. This book is a great book.
Christian perspective
C.S Lewis was a Christian when he was younger but when he grew up he started thinking that there was no God but then when he got a letter from his brother he started believing in God again. I think that he should have had
God in his life all the time. In this book there is war and all that but he came back alive there is also a time period when he sends his dad a whole bunch of letters to come ans see him but his dad never came. He could have prayed that his dad would come or that he would be safe during the war.
Your thoughts
I chose this book because I had to do a biography although I don't like biographies my opinion of this book is that it is a good book. I liked this book because I like C.S Lewis's books that he writes like the NARNIA series he put something really cool in this book I will put it at the end of my book report. I would recommend this book to people that like biographies cause they might like biographies
