Story:

This book is inspired by Helen Keller. This book is about her life, her struggles, and her achievements. Helen had a brain fever she was only one and half year old. After some days, her fever broke. No one knew what the fever had done to Helen. One day, when sunlight was hitting Helen’s face, she didn’t turn away from the bright light. She wasn’t blinking her eyes, Helen was blind. Few days later, her mom realized that she was deaf too.

Helen got to know members of her family: her parents, her step brothers, James and William; her aunt Ev and the servants. She used her simple signs to communicate with her family. For example, for bread, she would imitate cutting and putting butter on slices. For ice cream, she would shiver. Helen had developed 60 signs.

One of Helen’s favorite pranks was locking people in rooms. One day, she locked her mother in the pantry, after 3 hours she was found and released. The Keller’s endured Helen’s pranks until her behavior and her pranks became danger to Mildred (her new baby sister). One day, Helen saw Mildred sleeping in her favorite doll’s cradle. She turned the cradle over. Luckily, Mildred wasn’t hurt.

Helen’s parents started to find someone who can help Helen. After some time, a teacher was found. The teacher’s name was Anne Mansfield Suvillian. Anne had a terrible childhood herself. When she was 3 years old, she rubbed her eye because it itched. She had an infection. Then they took her to a doctor told them the problem was Trachoma. He gave them some medicine to put in Annie’s eye but it didn’t help either. Later Annie’s mother developed Tuberculosis. Her mother was expecting a baby. He was born with a disfigured hip because of Tuberculosis. Another baby was born named Mary. Few days later, Annie’s mother died. Annie was sent to a poor house along with Jimmy, her brother. Later, Jimmy died too. Annie had no one left. Then she graduated from an institution for blind. By the early 1887, Annie felt ready to educate Helen Keller.

The first thing she asked when they reached the house she asked “where’s Helen?” Helen’s dad pointed at the front porch. Annie was shocked t her arms to see Helen’s appearance. Helen felt some footsteps coming towards her. Helen thought it was her mother and she hugged her. Then Helen twisted her arms to get free and ran away from her. Curious, she came back and touched her face, her clothes etc.

Helen came to Annie’s room and Annie gave her a doll which was a present from the Perkins students. Helen loved that doll. Annie took Helen’s hand and carefully spelled D-O-L-L in Helen’s palm, she repeated it over and over again. Helen began to shape the letters herself. Annie took the doll from her and she wanted Helen to spell doll into Annie’s hand and she would return it. Helen had another idea. She launched her fist at Annie, she knew that Helen might do that and she was ready. She grabbed Helen’s arm and held it tightly. Helen ran out of the room. But curiosity brought her back. Helen thought of the spelling on the palm as game and they played it daily. One day, Annie took Helen to a water pump. First she made Helen touch the water and then she wrote W-A-T-E-R on her hand. Helen was confused. She did it again and again. Finally, Helen understood that she was trying to tell her that each word is actually a thing in real life. She asked Annie to spell what everything was in her palm every day.

When Helen grew up, she wanted to go to Radcliffe, which is the sister, school of Harvard. Cambridge school was made especially for girls who wanted to attend Radcliffe. In October 1896, she started attending Cambridge. It was pretty hard for Helen and she was studying history, German, Latin, and literature. Annie was not allowed to be with her during exemptions, instead her teacher spelled the questions into her palm. Finally after all the hard work, she got an acceptance letter from Radcliffe. Helen was the first handicap to attend the university. She arrived in fall of 1900. In 1903, Helen published her first book named The Story of My Life. In June 1904, Helen graduated from Radcliffe.

Helen wanted to become a socialist. She wanted to fight against the reason why most people become blind: Poverty. In 1909 she became a member in a socialist party. Then she started a lecture tour. In 1913, she was ready to take the stage. Helen was so terrified that she said that she would always remember this day even till her last breath.

Later she took some break from the socialist work and wrote some books which were: My religion and Midstream: My Afterlife. Helen was really exhausted from all the writing. My religion was inspired by the teachings of Emanuel Swedenborg.

On October 20, 1936, Annie died. Helen lost the person who she cared and loved the most. Helen’s friends were worried that now Annie gone she would fall apart. Annie’s remains were placed in National Cathedral in Washington. She was the first woman to receive such an honor.

In 1964,Helen received a presidential medal of freedom. After an year later, she was elected to the Women’s Hall of Fame at New York World’s Fair. In late May she had a heart attack and on June 1st she died quietly. She had lived a wonderful life and she knew when she died she would be able to see and hear.

Christian perspective:

I think this book is written in Christian perspective. As a socialist, she wanted to help people who were in need and spread God’s love and show them that He cares and loves them a lot. She had a hope in her that she wanted to help to stop the reasons people became blind after birth. She went to wounded men and gave them courage and told them that life isn’t over.

My thoughts

I really loved this book. The things I loved the most about the book were to see her courage and how she stood up for her rights. She achieved most of her goals even though she was disabled like graduating from Radcliffe, and she was also known as the most educated deaf and blind person in the world. I decided to read this book because a friend recommended this book to me. I would recommend this book to a person who enjoys reading about people’s lives and the amazing things they have done.

Story review
Born without arms or legs, Nick felt lonely, worthless, depressed, and resentful to God. The title of this book “Life without limits” represents that even though you seem to be worthless; you can still make changes in other people’s lives and give them hope.

Nick was born on December 4, 1982 and everyone was expecting Nick to be a healthy fine baby. Nick was his parents’ first born child, so his mother was very careful with him, but when Nick was born, everyone was shocked, disappointed, and could not except the truth. Instead of celebrating his birth, everyone was sad, in tears and thinking if God is a God of love, why would He let this happen.

Nick wasn’t depressed until the age of 8, when he realized he wasn’t “normal”. His parents kept encouraging him that God has a plan for him one day, and God didn’t make a mistake on him, but he was hopeless whenever anyone made fun of him. Nick believed that God could do miracles, and he had seen lots of miracles, but he didn’t understand why God wouldn’t perform miracles on him. Many nights, Nick would pray to God to give him at least one arm. He would go to sleep crying and dreaming that the next day God would show him a miracle. But it never happened.

It was when Nick was 15 years old, when he started to ask God for his guidance and his direction. One day he went to a church in California, and as he entered in his wheelchair, someone was calling him. He didn’t recognize the voice, but when he turned around he saw a young man holding a baby. When Nick came closer, he saw a shining brown hair and a big gap-toothed baby smiling. That baby was just like Nick. He had no arms or legs and had a little foot on his left just like Nick. Just by looking at the baby, Nick was amazed.

Nick realized that God didn’t do miracles on Nick, so that he can be a miracle to others and give them hope. God’s plan for Nick wasn’t to harm him; it was so that he could encourage others who are like Nick and to show that God has a plan for everyone. Nick realized that his career was to be a missionary by traveling around the world to encourage others and to make difference in other people’s lives.

Christian perspective

In my opinion, this book definitely reflects Christianity. This book talks about that even though you have struggles in your lives; God will help you and will not forsake you. It also talks about that God has a purpose for everyone and has bigger plans than we think, even though we might not understand at first. Even though Nick didn’t have arms or legs, he started to thank God for what he had already had, and not being angry for what he didn’t have. At first, Nick didn’t understand why he was on earth, but God showed him by step by step and kept him safe, because God knew that Nick could handle it.

Your thoughts

I enjoyed this book very much, because it taught you a lot. It gave stories, examples, and other great life lessons that I learned. It made me think about my life, and how I should be thankful for the things that I already have. It also made me think about God, how He has plans in my life and He only gives me what I can handle. I chose this book, because I love autobiography, and reading other people’s lives to see what experience they had. I would recommend this to anyone who feels like they’re worthless; want to give up their life, because there are greater plans in the future!

 Review

Ben wan an only child until his parents brought home an 8-month old chimpanzee named Zan. Bens parents were scientists. They bought Zan from a zoo to see if they could learn language. Since chimps cannot speak, they taught him American sign language.

Soon, they government lost interest in Project Zan and they cut the funding. Zan was growing much too big and much too strong to stay with Ben and his family. So, they had no choice but to sell Zan to a chimp ranch.

Soon Ben  and his family see that Zan is not safe there. They realize they have to get Zan back somehow. The ranch owner refuses to let them buy Zan back. They see that the only way to get Zan back is to steal him.

Christian Perspective

I dont think this book was written in a Christian perspective because they didnt pray when they could have. They could have prayed for the Government to keep funding the project
or they could have prayed for the money. Also once in the book they try and steal Zan and that is no what a Christian should do. They could have prayed that the chimp ranch owner would let them buy Zan back.

My Thoughts

I really liked this book. I did because I liked animals and I like the author. It has a very good story line. It is funny in some parts. It is sometimes suspenseful and you dont know what is going to happen next. I recomend this book to anyone who likes animals because it is about chimps.

Summary

This story is about two sisters. Now I am sure all you out there with siblings have problems, small or big, but once you hear Anna's story you will surely be forever grateful. This book was titled my sisters keeper because Anna's body is basically a market for her sister. Any of you ever heard of cancer? Yeah, these six letters are what is killing not just her big sister Kate, but her whole family. Her whole life Anna Fitzgerald has been a donor for Kate . In fact, Anna was born because of Kate. She never had a say in any thing, whether she wanted her kidneys delivered or not. She loved her sister very much, but sometimes Anna wonders what would've happened if Kate hadn't been sick, would she even be alive? As for her brother, growing up was a little different. With Kate's chemotherapy, no one ever noticed Jessie's Dyslexia. Jessie wanted attention so badly, he went into drugs. Having a child dying made him almost invisible. So who cared about what he did to his body?
Finally, Anna has a chance to stand up for herself. So when Campbell Alexander agrees to be her lawyer she begins her long journey to sue her parents for the right to her own body. Kate undergoes many treatments for her leukemia. All the while Anna's big day is coming closer and closer. Anna's mom is furious when she finds out what has been going on behind her back, but her daughter insists on carrying through. When Anna is asked why she is doing all this to her sister she collapses in tears. She had simply done what her sister had asked her to . No one believed her that Kate wanted to die, but through tears Anna explains the many times Kate had tried to kill her self. Anna was forced not to tell her parents that Kate had asked her to stop being a donor and after this information was stated, Anna is granted rights to her own body . Anna already knows hat she will never stop being a donor to Kate, However she was glad Campbell Alexander believed she could do it. When driving home, something happens that no one ever thought could happen. Kate lives! However, when Kate returns home there is one chair missing at the table.

Christian Perspective

Whether this book was written from a Christian perspective or not depends on the reader . While this book only mentions the Lord once or twice, I do believe it was. This story talked about a life full of struggles and hardship. And also the loving bond sisters can have for each other. Anna shows some very Christ like attitudes in this story, she gave up so much for her sister ,and that is what God expects each of us to do for each other. He will heal the broken, but sometimes he heals through people. So many people around the world are dying from cancer. And sadly this is such a strong disease, that sometimes people we love loose the battle. But we must remember that this is not our home. This life we live now is so precious, and we must be thankful for that, but just imagine how much more precious our lives will be in heaven. We will live with the mighty creator, the one who gave us life. Who heard our first word and final breath. God knows how hard this world is, his son died the sinners death, his life was on the same earth we now live on. Kate and Anna share a bound that not many sisters do, even when Anna is far away Kate still breaths through all the organs her sister has sacrificed. And that is what the Lord has done for us. We live because he suffered.
Jesus is calling us to do the same.

Personal Thoughts

I really enjoyed this book, however, I never knew I could cry this much over a story. It took me a few days to regain my strength. Then I remembered to be thankful for my life. This story includes themes of hope, sisterhood, and human rights. If you decide to read this book, I hope you will love the characters as much as I did, and welcome them into your family for a few days. Do remember to have a box of Kleenex beside you. I recommend this book to a strong reader. This book does deal with a lot of medical terms and concepts, however, if you stay strong for a little while longer you will make you see how beautiful words can be when put together. It is a lovely story of sisterhood and kindness, and something you sure won't forget. Enjoy!

Anne Frank:The Diary of a Young Girl

Story Review

The reason that this book is titled "Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl" is because this book is written by Anne Frank and it is her diary that she wrote during world war two.

Anne Frank was born on June 12, 1929 to her parents Otto Frank and his wife Edith in Germany. She also had an older sister, named Margot. These and The people they live with(Mr. and Mrs.Van Daan and their son,Peter) are the main characters. This book takes place from when Anne is 13, and it ends right before she turns 16,so from the years 1942 to 1945.

At the beginning of this book, Anne is living in her house with her family and is very happy. This book starts on her birthday, the day she gets her diary. As shes writing, she decides that she will write her diary to an imaginary friend named Kitty. She loves her diary because it is the only place where she can express all of her real opinions and thoughts about everything. Anne loves to write and is very happy with her life.

But then her family is forced to go into hiding because Anne's sister, Margot, has been summoned for deportation, which means she would have to go on a train and be taken to a concentration camp. They go into hiding in the office where her father works, in the back rooms that nobody knows are there. They stay there and are well for about two years, until the Germans come and force the people working in the building to tell them where Anne's family is hiding. These are people who have been helping them get food and supplies from the outside world.

Anne and her family are taken to a concentration camp, but the men and women have to go in different places, so she and her father are separated, but she manages to stay with her mother and sister. They stay in little houses with about 4 other women. The houses are infested with lice, so after not very long, they all have lice ,too. The prisoners have to spend 12 hours a day digging sod. Anne stayed in the the camp for almost a year, before she passes away from exhaustion and starvation. Her mother died several months before and her sister had died a couple of days before. Anne died three months before she would have been sixteen. Her father was the only one in their family who survived the concentration camp.

Months after, he returned to Amsterdam. One of the neighbors gave him Annes diary and sketches, which had been left behind when they were taken. At first, he just kept them as a memorial but then he had them published, with the help of a professor, and many revised versions had also come out in the following years.

My Thoughts

I chose this book because i had read different, shorter, versions of this book and wanted to know some more details about Anne Franks life. I liked this book because it shows what it was really like during world war two, from a pespective that i could relate to. I also liked that at the end of this specific copy of the book, it gives the story again, but way shorter, with all of the facts that were unclear in the actual diary. The themes in this book were perserverance and how violence can affect childrens life negatively.

Recommendation

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes factual books because this book is full of interesting information and facts. I would also recommend it to anyone who likes reading auto-biographies.

Christian Perspective

I am not sure if this book was written in a christian perspective or not, because since it is a diary, Anne would have to be a christian for it to have been. But some of the traits she had were christian, like optimism, hope, and always caring about the safety of her family. As a christian, I think that just like Anne perserveered thruogh all of the hardships and always did her very best, we should be our best through christ and in our every day lives.

Brothers Far From Home

Title : Brothers Far From Home
Author: Jean Little
Publisher: Scholastic
Place and Year of publication : Canada 2003
Number of pages : 235
Where I found the book: School library

The themes of family and perseverance couldn't be more powerful than in the World War 1 diary of Eliza Bates. "Brother Far From Home" is only a glimpse of the tragedy that war creates and the people it destroys. The title itself hints at the pain it brings a family to have their sons leave the comfort of their home to die at the enemies' unmerciful hands. In this book, twelve-year old Eliza is very attached to her siblings, and especially to her older brother Hugo. She looks up to him for everything and means the world to her. Then the war begins in 1916, and Hugo and her other brother James go to war, leaving Eliza always wondering what will happen to her family's future, and if her brothers will come back home.

So, when the fateful war begins Eliza continues to live her life in Uxbridge,Ontario fearing that any piece of news that might come would shatter her life into pieces. She eventually starts to question everything she's learned from childhood as a preacher's daughter. She wonders how God would allow something like war to happen. As the war continued, Eliza's life dragged on until the most unexpected , most dreaded thing happens. Hugo dies at the hands of a Canadian soldier. The news shock everyone who hears them. Eliza's family drowns in grief over the loss of their beloved son Hugo; the piece of their family that will forever be gone. Eliza herself felt as if a knife was shoved straight into her heart. As they mourned their loss, only bad news came. James was seriously injured and may not survive.

Eventhough the Bates family struggles to handle the news of Hugo and James. Eliza persevred through it all just for the sake of her brother, knowing that he wanted her to be happy no matter what might happen to him. Even if that meant that life will never be the same again. Hugo's death was the price they paid to the war, and will keep paying for until they reach the doorstep of their graves. The pain and grief never goes away; but this is the ultimate sacrifice and the price of peace.

Christian Perspective
Yes, I do think this book is written in a Christian perspective. The author refers to God a lot in the book from a Christian point of view. As a Christian, I think that there is a lot that I could learn from Eliza Bates' perseverance that I should have in my own life. I think that if I was in her place I would have asked God the same questions. Her story reminds that eventhough there is pain in this world, God is still there with us holding our hands. And no matter what might happen God will never give us something we can't handle.

My Thoughts
I chose this book because I wanted to read a biography. As I read this great story, I was inspired by the events of our past. I enjoyed looking at World War 1 from the unique perspective, that is illustrated in every page. One of the things I enjoyed was the honest opinion of the author that lasted throughout the book. I would recommend this book to any reader who loves history and hungers to know the truth.
